Winter Olympics 2010: Michael Schmid wins ski cross gold
So in the sport of skier cross where arms, legs and poles fly high, the amplitude of the skiers off the jumps is huge and inevitably when skis cross, or when they take too much air, there are spills aplenty.
Canadian hero Christophe Delbosco knows this well. He was in the final in the bronze medal position coming up to the final big air when he went huge, slightly on edge to try and eclipse a bit more time and maybe, just maybe, snag a silver. He snagged, alright. The snow. Headfirst.
This is the mad, bad world of skier cross, a new event on the Olympic calendar. Its Vancouver Winter Olympics debut was everything it had been made out to be. Why did it take so long for it to be on the Olympic program?
The four thousand strong spectators at Cypress Mountain were suitably pumped. The skiers more so. They went through qualifying runs, and then in very quick succession (no rest for fatigues muscles here) by the time they catch the chairlift to the top again there were the eighth-finals, quarter finals, semi-finals and the final.
There was the former US alpine racer Daron Ralhves, recovering from a recently dislocated hip, spinning out and landing on his sorest point in the first race. Whoops, He’s gone.
There’s Scott Kneller, the unlikely Australian who was the second last competitor to qualify for the Games, absent from training for the past month because of a brain contusion and fractured collarbone from a world cup in Austria, who was steady through to the final eight. How is he feeling?
"I’m stoked, this is just the best, I couldn’t be happier, I can’t even feel my shoulder’’ He finished seventh overall.
And then there was the Norwegian bronze medalist Audun Groenvold who said the last jump was like jumping out of a second-floor window. He saw the crowd favourite Delbosco go down in front of him.
He said: "You can’t describe the feeling, I was in fourth behind Chris and I was thinking ‘it isn’t over until you cross the finish line’. I hung on his tail. When you see someone crash like that I feel sorry, but I was not part of it."
The world No 1 Michael Schmid of Switzerland had the strength and the best strategy to get in front and stay there. He won each of his rounds and was never not in the lead as he went on to win the gold medal, just ahead of Austrian Andreas Matt.
“We had a lot of fun out there today," said Schmid. So did everyone watching.

Laax und Ski Cross
Laax organisierte einer der ersten SSkiX überhaupt, um 2003, und was für ein geiler. Andy Mannhart hat ihn gebaut, mit einem natürlichen über einem Felsen gebauten Biiiiiiiiiiig Air. alles war gut organisiert, mit einer super video übertragung, aber nichts half. und ich war dabei, rokkte in den qualifikationsläufen runter, wie auch Renato D, Martin R, Patrick H, Rumetg C, Christian C, Markus M, Maurus C, PatrickH, ArnaudC, und am allerlässesten, die elegante und hübsche Dame mit dem anmutigen Lächeln, die ich immer nur auf dem snowboard gesehen habe, und neben mir am start stand, und ich nicht wusste, dass sie überhaupt SSkifaaaren kann, Yvonne B! gewonnen hat GAVAGGIO Enak.
die betriebsleitung von Laax hat weitere Ski Cross gestrichen. eine Fehlentscheidung, diejenigen, die so entschieden haben, sind snowboarder, und die sind in Laax in der Mehrheit. in Laax gibts halt ein Machtgerangel zwischen den Skifaarern und snowboarder.
jetzt da wir einen Olympia Sieger mit Mike Schmid haben, kriegt SkiX aufwind, und Laax steet im abseits. der SkiX von Laax wäre das Lauberhorn oder die Streif von Kitzbühl im SSkiX geworden, mit viil Tradition und Class und mit viil freier Werbung weltweit. aber man glaubt an die snowboarder.
August Poltera baute diesen SSkiX im 2004 in Laax, da Andimann andersweitig tätig war, start beim Restaurant Curnius

Der 25-jährige Berner war in der Qualifikation der Schnellste und kam in allen Läufen als Erster ins Ziel.

mon très cher copain, hat ihn gebaut, und ich habe als ältester SSki crosser mit viil stolz, aber auch mit viiil Gagg in den Hosen, bei den Zeitläufen mitgemacht.
